Genki-Jutsu is a renowned martial arts and fitness school located in Hadleigh, New Zealand. Founded by Michelle Kemp and Ondie Woods, the primary objective of Genki-Jutsu is to provide children with high-quality karate training in an environment where the focus is on learning rather than profit.
Having identified a lack of proper fitness knowledge in local classes for both adults and children, Kemp and Woods decided to establish Genki-Jutsu. They firmly believe that fitness training is an essential aspect of any sport, including karate. The school aims to teach safe and effective warm-ups and cool downs, correct stretching and flexibility techniques, balance, core strength, muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular training. All training programmes at Genki-Jutsu are designed to be safe, effective, and progressive, which ultimately leads to enhanced performance and skills in karate.
At Genki-Jutsu, great emphasis is placed on correct technique. Every detail in class is closely observed to ensure that students receive the best possible instruction. Children are not allowed to participate in sparring until they demonstrate spatial awareness, control, and understanding. The school admits children starting from six years old, as at this age, they are already familiar with classroom environments and have improved concentration skills.
Kemp and Woods firmly believe that starting training before this age is a waste of time and money.
As parents themselves, the instructors at Genki-Jutsu truly understand and care for their students. Each child is treated as an individual and encouraged to work to their best abilities. The instructors know every student's name and are aware of any medical conditions, implementing appropriate safeguards when necessary. The school also maintains an open door policy for parents, allowing them to observe classes and see firsthand what goes on.
Unlike some schools that prioritise profit, Genki-Jutsu ensures that students only advance to higher grades when the instructors deem them ready. Classes are charged on a weekly basis, eliminating the need for monthly direct debit payments or fees for missed classes. The school has developed a strong sense of loyalty among its students, who stay committed to the programme.
The ultimate goal of Genki-Jutsu is to develop students who are fit and strong enough to meet the demands of karate. The school aims to cultivate technical skills, speed, discipline, and respect through enjoyable and comfortable training sessions. Genki-Jutsu instructors have all undergone CRB checks to ensure the safety of the children, and the school is a proud member of Shi Kon Martial Arts and MASA Martial Arts Standards Agency.
