One of the unique offerings at Free-Ski Scotland is their Sidecountry & Ski Touring course. This two-day group course introduces participants to the concept of sidecountry skiing, which involves ski touring within the bounds of resorts. The course covers basic off-piste ski technique and teaches participants how to access areas of in-bounds skiing that would typically be difficult to reach. The instructors focus on creating a safe and familiar learning environment, allowing participants to explore sidecountry skiing without the added stress of being in remote backcountry terrain.

To participate in the Sidecountry & Ski Touring course, it is recommended that participants have a good level of fitness and are comfortable doing consistent, controlled parallel turns on blue runs in variable conditions. No prior experience with ski touring is necessary. Throughout the two days, participants will spend time at the Cairngorm Ski Resort, engaging in lift-accessed skiing, ski touring, and basic avalanche training. The course covers downhill off-piste skiing technique, uphill travel on skins, planning, decision-making, and safety.

The meeting place for the course is the Cairngorm Ski Resort car park, where participants will gather to begin their adventure.
