One of the highlights of Fishers Track is the epic views of the surrounding volcanoes to the west and east, including Mount Hauhungatahi, which is Tongariro National Park's fourth and oldest volcano. The trail also offers a thrilling downhill experience through farmland on an official public road with no cars in sight. It is an ideal entry-level backcountry ride, allowing riders to experience the beauty of the landscape without excessive difficulty.

The history and background of Fishers Track adds to its charm. It was originally formed in 1896 to provide access to Retaruke and Kaitieke Valleys and was later superseded as settlements developed to the North. The trail was likely used by early European settlers for horse coach traffic coming up from the Whanganui River. In 2002, the trail was re-imagined as a walking and cycling track by a community group from National Park Village, with subsequent support from the John Key job summit in 2009.

Today, it is a superb day ride and a significant section of the Mountains to Sea Ng Ara Thono full route.

The trail route begins at the Pou at the National Park Village Park and Ride. Following the Fishers Track marked signs, cyclists will make their way towards the right and then left, crossing over the railway line. From there, it is a short but steady climb up the Fishers/Kurua gravel road, taking riders through the ecologically and geographically important Erua forest. This forest is home to a significant fault line, rare orchids, kiwi populations, and regenerating bush.

At the top, cyclists can take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking views before embarking on the thrilling downhill section known as the “Public Road” single track. This stretch encompasses a mix of bush, farmland, and rural landscapes, providing a diverse and captivating experience. Riders should keep an eye out for the old stream-fed horse trough carved out of natural stone along the side of the track.

Upon reaching the bottom, cyclists will take a right turn onto Kaitieke Road and follow the gently descending gravel road until they reach the unique horseshoe monument. This impressive sculpture, made entirely from old horseshoes, celebrates the Horse of the Year. It also serves as the pick-up point for day rider shuttles.

It is important to note that Fishers Track forms part of the Mountains to Sea - Nga Ara Tuhono Adventure route. Furthermore, it connects with the Kaiwhakauka Track at the village of Whakahoro and then with the Mangapurua Track near the Mangapurua Trig. The trail is graded as 2 (easy) and is suitable for riders of most abilities, including beginners. While a good level of fitness is required for the loop back to National Park Village, the trail is primarily downhill, making it achievable for riders with moderate fitness levels.

Some sections, particularly at the western end, may become slippery when wet.

Fishers Track is primarily a gravel surface with approximately 5 km of fun and scenic dirt track. It is best suited for mountain bikes, and e-bikes are also permitted. The trail is well signposted, ensuring that cyclists can navigate their way with ease. Along the way, riders will encounter informative signs that provide interesting facts about the area's history, geology, and natural features.
