Findon Skid Kids Club is a renowned sports club and car racing track located in the suburb of Findon in Adelaide, South Australia. Established on February 26th, 1958, the club has a rich history in the sport of Cycle Speedway and is Australia's oldest Cycle Speedway and Skid Kid Club. The name “Findon Skid Kids” became famous for their Trick Riding Display Team, which performed at various South Australian & Victorian Country Shows, as well as local school fetes. Notably, the team was invited to perform at the Sydney Royal Easter Shows in 1973 and 1978, where they showcased their skills in front of a crowd of 43,000 people per show.
One of the highlights of the Display Team was the 7 bike pyramid with 26 riders and the World Famous Fire-Jump. Although the Display Team was abandoned in 1996, the Fire-Jump still remains as a spectacular part of the club's performances. As the club evolved, it focused on the sport of Cycle Speedway, which is now operated in various countries including England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Poland, and soon in New Zealand.
The Findon Skid Kids Cycle Speedway club welcomes new members of all ages. The sport allows for body contact in the older grades, with most of the physical work done by lower limbs. Safety is a priority, and all competitors are required to wear a safety helmet and must be covered from the neck down. The sport is fast-paced, but broken bones are rare.
The club has participants ranging from 3 years to 70 years old, with 9 age groups, including 2 girls' grades. The club supplies bikes, helmets, and gloves for new members, who can enjoy the first 5 race meetings free.
The Findon Skid Kids Club takes pride in having the best facilities and track in the world, which has been achieved through the dedication of past and present members. The club holds regular individual local points meetings, as well as team tournaments, best pairs, and individual championships, providing a diverse racing calendar. The club emphasises the importance of bike handling, technical ability, and physical fitness, which can only be gained through training and experience.
As Australia's oldest Cycle Speedway and Skid Kid Club, the Findon Skid Kids Club has a 50-year history that can be explored in their history book. The club looks forward to hosting the World Championships in Adelaide in November 2017 and aims to introduce two new grades (Under 14 & Under 16) at the event. The club encourages individuals from all countries to advise them of any Cycle Speedway Clubs operating abroad.
