Feltwell Golf Club, located on Thor Avenue in Feltwell, Norfolk, is a picturesque golfing destination on the edge of the Fens, near Mildenhall. With its fast draining soil, the course remains open all year round, eliminating the need for winter greens or tee boxes. Feltwell Golf Club boasts an all-round Practise Area and Driving Range facility, complemented by a convenient ball dispenser outside, which can be accessed by purchasing tokens. Visitors can also pre-purchase tokens for use outside of club hours.
This welcoming golf club is open to everyone, providing excellent value for money to both members and Green Fee players. Feltwell Golf Club has a fascinating history, having initially opened in 1970 on the former RAF Thor Missile Site. Originally, membership was offered exclusively to RAF and USAF personnel before being extended to civilians. At that time, the club was known as RAF Feltwell Golf Club.
In 1975, however, the USAF terminated the lease of the land, resulting in a temporary closure of the course. Fortunately, six former members negotiated a new lease, leading to the formation of Feltwell (Anglo-American) Golf Club. The club finally adopted its current name, Feltwell Golf Club, in 1983, and in 1986, it became a Private Members Club. Throughout the years, the club has flourished and is now a course that all members can take pride in.
Feltwell Golf Club is a full-length 36 Par, 9 Hole Course, featuring 18 Tee Boxes and exceptional Practise Facilities. While it may be a 9 Hole Course, do not be deterred, as many professionals utilise courses like this one for practise. Its layout also serves as a convenient option for individuals with busy lifestyles, allowing them to “grab” 9 holes on their way home from work or before picking up their children from school. At Feltwell Golf Club, there is always Time for 9.
The club's Junior Section is also thriving, promoting the inclusion of families and providing support for each other in the sport. In 2002, a new Clubhouse was constructed, expanding the club's offerings to include excellent catering facilities for members, societies, and various social functions. Membership is not mandatory, as everyone is welcome at Feltwell Golf Club.
Feltwell Golf Club's membership offers a range of benefits, including the chance to experience an all-round golfing experience, make unlimited use of the course and practise facilities, and benefit from being open year-round without the need for winter greens or tee boxes. Members can also receive tuition from an accredited PGA Professional and enjoy reciprocal arrangements with selected Golf Courses through the 9 Hole Alliance. A variety of membership packages are available, each offering different advantages. Additionally, members can enjoy discounts on beverages, clubhouse hire, and access to the bar and restaurant, which is open six days a week.
The 9 Hole format of golf is rapidly growing in popularity, advocated by professionals such as Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose. They campaign for more 9 hole competitions to encourage golfers to play the game, focusing on the concept that there is always Time for Nine. Many professionals also utilise 9 Hole Courses, like Feltwell Golf Club, for their practise rounds, making it suitable for both scratch players and beginners. No matter your skill level, Feltwell Golf Club offers a place for you.
