Brian Cobbe invites you to the Feilding Bridge Club, the heart of Bridge in Feilding. This thriving club of 93 members is open to anyone eager to play or learn Bridge.
The Feilding Bridge Club's journey began in 1971 when a handful of enthusiasts, inspired by their visits to Palmerston North, decided to bring the game to their local community. Brian Cobbe, a lawyer by profession, laid the foundation by drafting the necessary documents. Back then, members gathered at the Senior Citizens Hall on Bowen Street every Monday night, packing away all the equipment into a locked cupboard after each session.
Alan Coleman, a dedicated teacher and seasoned player, was instrumental in the club's early growth. He devoted his time to teaching Bridge, enriching the skills of many new players.
In 1985, under Nessie Gollan’s presidency, the club took a bold step by purchasing its own venue on Derby Street, thanks to a loan from BNZ and contributions from members. Despite operating as a non-profit with limited funds, this move marked a significant milestone.
The club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1997 with a special tournament and dinner at Feilding Agricultural High School. Over the years, consistent growth in membership enabled the club to repay its loan and continuously upgrade its facilities, including a dedicated office, new kitchen, improved insulation, and updated equipment.
Today, Feilding Bridge Club plays sessions on Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as Fridays. Supported by grants and the dedication of each President and Committee, the club remains a vibrant part of the community.
