Fatboy Charters is a fishing and diving charter company located in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. The company operates the “Fatboy,” a 7. 2-metre AMF heavy-duty alloy boat known for its soft riding and stability. The boat can accommodate up to five passengers and offers a comfortable and safe experience on the water.
The charter operates with a focus on COVID-19 safety and requires all passengers to be fully vaccinated. This is done to ensure fairness and the well-being of everyone on board. With a cruising speed of approximately 20 knots in most conditions, the Fatboy allows the fishing enthusiasts more time to do what they came for – catch fish.
Fatboy Charters caters to all types of fishing, from bottom fishing to big game fishing for marlin and other species. The boat is equipped with modern equipment including a SIMRAD NSS12 sonar/chart plotter and ICOM VHF radio. An AM/FM radio with iPod connectivity is available for entertainment, and there is also a private toilet on board situated in the V-berth.
Currently, the cost for a full day's fishing experience, which lasts approximately 9 hours, is $1000 for up to five persons. Rods and tackle are available for $25 per person, and bait costs an additional $15 per person. If you wish to fish deepwater for bass, hapuku, bluenose, or kingfish, there is an additional fee of $200. This fee also applies if you wish to go to Mayor Island due to the greater distance involved.
As an extra service, the captain will fillet and pack your catch for free, ready to cook.
Half-day charters can be arranged for $900 plus the cost of gear. All charters depart between 6:30 AM and 7 AM, or by private arrangement. The meeting point before boarding the boat is at the Pilot Bay Boat Ramp, located at the base of the Mount Maunganui, across from the camping grounds.
In addition to fishing charters, Fatboy Charters also offers harbour cruises that cover a majority of the harbour areas and shipping wharves. These cruises provide a great opportunity to admire the beautiful marine creatures and enjoy a fun day out. For a group of five persons, the costs are less than $20 per hour, making it excellent value.
