Established in 1943 by a small group of Catholics with a shared interest in bushwalking, the club has since grown to nearly 400 members. While the club's name may suggest that membership is exclusive to Catholics, it is important to note that the club is open to everyone who meets the entry requirements.
The Catholic Bushwalking Club has been a trailblazer in recreational bushwalking, particularly in the Sydney area. The club has been among the first to explore many wilderness areas, including several canyons in the Blue Mountains. Each weekend, the club organises at least one walk, and they often schedule walks midweek as well. Walks of various difficulty levels are available, ranging from easy on-track walks to challenging adventures in untracked terrain.
In addition to bushwalking, the club offers an array of outdoor activities such as abseiling, canyoning, climbing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, bike riding, caving, and canoeing. Social functions are also organised for members to connect and bond over their shared love for the outdoors.
Membership of the Catholic Bushwalking Club is not limited to Catholics. As long as you share a mutual interest in bushwalking and the outdoors, you are welcome to join. However, all members are expected to respect the values of the club. As of December 2021, the club had a total membership of 333, and in that year, they offered 204 walks to their members.
To join the club, you can contact the Membership Secretary or complete and return the Prospective Membership Form along with the application fee. The Membership Secretary can be reached via email or postal mail. Prospective members are required to complete four club walks within a timeframe of four to twelve months. They must also demonstrate knowledge of navigating on a bushwalk and possess the necessary gear.
The Catholic Bushwalking Club is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984, which provides legal protection and benefits to its members. Public Liability Insurance is also maintained to cover the club and its members.
