Is Gursharan Sahota, an experienced martial artist with a passion for teaching karate as a way of life. Gursharan began his karate journey at the age of 14 in a local club and quickly earned his black belt 1st dan (shodan) four years later. He has since achieved an impressive 8th dan and has competed in numerous kata and kumite events at national and international levels.
In 1984, Gursharan had the opportunity to travel to Japan and train in a Japanese dojo under the instruction of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa, a pivotal experience that solidified his dedication to karate. Inspired by this trip, Gursharan opened his first club in Luton/Dunstable in 1981, which eventually became the association's headquarters. In 1993, he founded his own association, TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association), which has grown to be one of the largest associations in the UK.
Gursharan's love for karate remains strong, as he continues to teach over 35 classes a week in the UK and conducts master classes internationally. He has trained and guided hundreds of students of all ages to black belt standard and beyond. Beyond his dedication to karate, Gursharan is also involved in charity work, funding projects in India and helping subsidise trips for surgeons to operate on underprivileged children in third-world countries.
The Ely, Newmarket, and Soham Shotokan Karate Clubs, established over a decade ago, are family-friendly clubs that welcome students of all ages. From the age of 4 to adults, all participants train together in a supportive and inclusive environment. The classes focus on three main areas: kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).
While building practical skills and technique, the instructors also prioritise fitness in the training sessions, ensuring students are able to maintain an enjoyable and active lifestyle. Regular gradings are held throughout the year, providing students with the opportunity to take exams for their next grade, fostering self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, an annual competition is held within the club, allowing students to compete against other TISKA members from different regions.
To stay connected with the club, individuals can find Ely, TISKA Shotokan Karate Club on social media platforms such as the TISKA Facebook Group and TISKA Instagram. For more information, inquiries, or to join the club, individuals can visit the club's website and contact Lena Stockley at lena. Stockley@outlook. Com.
Overall, the Ely, TISKA Shotokan Karate Club offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals and families to develop their balance, coordination, self-confidence, and discipline through the practise of martial arts. Whether a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, all are encouraged to join and experience the benefits of this traditional and respected martial art form.
