Elaine Milbourne Performing Arts School (EMPAS) in Newcastle upon Tyne is a renowned establishment offering a wide range of subjects for the performing arts. Established in 1980 by Elaine Milbourne as the Elaine Milbourne Theatre Dance School, the institution has since expanded its offerings to include a broader range of performing arts subjects, prompting a change in name and location. Situated at Newburn Old Town Hall, the school boasts four purpose-built studios with sprung wooden floors, barres, and mirrors. Additionally, there is a dedicated singing and music room. The facilities also include a refreshment station, offering coffee, tea, and a variety of snacks.
EMPAS has always been actively involved in the community, often appearing at local events, fetes, and shows. The school regularly participates in local festivals, workshops, CYD events, and TDCI Championships. Furthermore, EMPAS has had the privilege of performing in theatres across all regions, as well as at renowned venues such as Disneyland Paris and Her Majesty's Theatre in London.
Pupils at EMPAS receive guidance and coaching to audition for external shows and events, including local pantomimes, professional productions, and operatic societies. Notably, a previous EMPAS student was crowned “Miss Dance of Great Britain,” and the school currently has several students working professionally around the world.
Throughout the year, EMPAS enters numerous candidates with the International Dance Theatres Association (I. D. T. A.
) for exams at all levels, boasting an enviable reputation and excellent success rate. The school's pupils are regularly nominated for the I. Theatre Awards, with previous winners in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2020, along with numerous bursary awards and commendations in all subjects over the years. Over the years, EMPAS students have successfully gained places and scholarships at renowned institutions such as the English National Ballet School, Bird College of Dance, Tring Park School for Performing Arts, Laine Theatre Arts, and Phil Winston's Theatreworks.
Additionally, EMPAS has had and continues to have pupils on Associate programmes with esteemed organisations including the Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet, Hammond, SLP, SMB, Tap Attack, Denman, and Renaissance Arts.
