Located in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire Cricket Club was established in 2013 by local residents who recognised the lack of cricket clubs and training facilities in the area. With a council area population of over 95,000 residents, the club was formed to provide cricket playing opportunities to juniors and adults across the local authority.
Over the past 7 years, East Renfrewshire Cricket Club has grown into a thriving volunteer-led organisation with over 150 members. The club boasts 2 senior teams and 5 junior teams, catering to both beginners and advanced players. The club is proud to have secured a 31-year lease for their ground, which includes a new drainage system, an 8 wicket grass square, and a fully enclosed quadruple lane outdoor net facility.
The club's achievements are extensive and highlight their commitment to the community. They have invested over 4000 volunteer hours into the club since its inception, leading cricket delivery to 23 primary schools and 6 high schools. Each year, the club delivers approximately 190 schools cricket coaching sessions and provides 120 hours of community coaching during the summer. They also offer their ground to host interschool matches, school sports days, and various community activities at no charge.
East Renfrewshire Cricket Club has been actively involved in promoting cricket at both the primary and secondary school levels. They have coached and led 10 high school teams to national secondary school competitions and have established a girls-only cricket after-school club. The club also organises and hosts a number of kwik cricket festivals and a super six indoor interschool cricket league.
To ensure year-round training opportunities, the club has secured an indoor facility at Barrhead Foundry for winter training. They also maintain the Woodfarm grounds, which include grass cutting, weeding, and rubbish collection. Their dedicated volunteer programme has ensured the smooth functioning of the club, with coaches obtaining 58 qualifications including UKCC levels I and II, first aid, safeguarding, and protecting children.
East Renfrewshire Cricket Club is committed to continuous improvement and development. They have acquired Woodfarm Playing fields on a 31-year lease and have invested in a non-turf pitch as well as equipment such as triple gang mowers, rotary mowers, and portable batting cages. The club also employs a part-time development officer and is actively working towards increasing their staff, including a girls and disability officer.
The work done by the club has not gone unnoticed, and their staff has been recognised locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally for their contributions to the sport. They fully acknowledge and welcome the findings of the Plan4Sport Independent Review into Racism in Scottish Cricket and are committed to promoting a culture of inclusivity, respect, and equality within the club.
At East Renfrewshire Cricket Club, the heart of the club beats for cricket, but also for building a strong community that supports one another. They invite anyone interested in cricket to come and join their club, whether they are beginners or advanced players. With a firm commitment to inclusivity and a passion for the sport, East Renfrewshire Cricket Club is a welcoming and vibrant community for cricket enthusiasts in Glasgow.
