East London Shorinji Kempo, led by organiser John Smith, is a Japanese martial arts and self-defence school based in Mile End, London. John aims to teach practical self-defence skills in a fun and safe environment, focusing on Shorinji Kempo, a martial art that utilises physical principles and weak points rather than brute strength.
Shorinji Kempo blends “hard” techniques like kicks and punches with “soft” techniques such as escapes, locks, and throws. This ensures students can defend themselves against larger or stronger opponents. Training also includes restorative massage (seiho) and seated meditation (zazen), promoting mutual respect and cooperation over competition.
The Goho (hard system) teaches effective strikes with hands and feet, alongside blocks and counter-attacks. It emphasises body movement for generating powerful strikes instead of relying solely on strength.
The Juho (soft system) focuses on escapes, locks, and throws to counter grabs. Painful joint locks and balance techniques enable even smaller individuals to successfully throw larger opponents.
Meditation (chinkon gyo) is integral to every class, helping students develop a calmer mind, manage stress, and maintain focus. This mental training complements physical practice to enhance overall well-being.
Seiho, a restorative massage system similar to shiatsu, rebalances joints, muscles, and tendons after intense training. Advanced students also learn joint realignment and resuscitation techniques.
East London Shorinji Kempo welcomes beginners and provides a friendly, supportive atmosphere for all. Adult classes are held on Wednesdays from 19:00-21:00 and Saturdays from 12:30-14:00 at Qmotion Mind & Body Studio. The drop-in rate is £11, or £5 for students, with the first class free.
To join, just bring water, comfortable gym clothes, and an open mind. The school supports students of all levels and abilities, although classes are for those over 18 due to gym policy.
