Hockey facilities have been developed across the country, including the Goldfields Hockey Stadium in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association (EGHA) is proud to call this state-of-the-art facility its home.
Hockey in the Goldfields has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. The sport was initially played by women, with men's hockey arriving in the region in 1932. The competition grew steadily, with several teams competing on gravel grounds at Cruickshank's Arena (men's) and Boxhall Park (women's) throughout the years.
In the 1970s, Cruickshank's Arena was grassed, and the men's competition temporarily moved to Wallace Park, while the women continued to play at Cruickshank Oval. However, the introduction of the Goldfields Hockey Stadium changed the game entirely. The stadium, which incorporates both artificial and grass pitches, became the headquarters of hockey in the region.
Over the years, clubs have come and gone through mergers or closures. Some of the oldest clubs that are still active today include Mines Hockey Club (established in 1932), North Kalgoorlie-Wesley (1952), YM (1956), CBC (1958), and Pegasus (1975). In 1989, the Men's and Women's Associations merged, further strengthening the sport in the Goldfields.
The EGHA has a strong focus on both junior and senior participation. Currently, there are six clubs participating in the Winter Field Hockey Competition, with teams at various levels. The association also offers an Introduction to Hockey programme, welcoming newcomers to the sport.
The Goldfields Hockey Stadium remains at the forefront of artificial hockey surfaces in Australia. Since the introduction of these surfaces in 1979, the stadium has provided players with a high-quality playing environment. This has translated into strong representation for the region at the State Country Championships, with both men's and women's teams consistently performing well.
The EGHA is always looking to welcome new members to the Goldfields Hockey Family. Whether you're new to town or new to the game, the association offers options for players of all ages and skill levels. For more information on how to join, please visit the Contacts Page on their website.
The Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association is proud to have the support of various sponsors who contribute to the growth and development of the sport in the region. They also offer pitch arena advertising opportunities for local businesses interested in supporting the game and connecting with the hockey and general community.
