About

Duri Memorial Sportsground is a memorial sports ground situated in Duri, New South Wales. It features a striking gate constructed of two brick pillars joined by a metal gate and arch, with several plaques attached to the pillars. The sports ground is located opposite the site of the former Duri Railway Station.

Originally dedicated on Anzac Day in 1954, the memorial gates were officially opened by Mr. P. Page, the initial president of the Duri Progress Association. The honour rolls bearing the names of those who served in the two World Wars and the Korean War were unveiled by Dr.

G. Archbold, the past President of the Tamworth RSL. The funding for the ground purchase and the erection of the gate and commemorative plaques was provided by the government and the Patriotic Trust.

The inscription on the memorial gate reads “Arch D. M. S. G 1914-18 1939-45” on the eastern side plaque, and “In loving memory of FRANK RIXON killed in action 7th May 1945 aged 22 years.

'He is not dead that liveth. '" on the western side plaque.

The surrounding area of Duri Memorial Sportsground is a garden/park setting, providing a serene and peaceful environment. The memorial serves as a tribute to the sacrifices made by the servicemen and women in the First World War (191418), Second World War (193945), and the Korean War.

Duri Memorial Sportsground is recorded by Graham Wilson OAM and was constructed between 1953 and 1954. The dedication ceremony was held on April 25, 1954. The sports ground is currently maintained by the Tamworth Regional Council.

The memorial is a part of the wider collection of war memorials held by the NSW War Memorials Register. It is located in proximity to other memorials, such as the Duri-Warral Honour Roll and the Duri First World War Honour Roll. Visitors to the area can explore these nearby memorials to gain a deeper appreciation of the local history and the sacrifices made by the community.

Duri Memorial Sportsground stands as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of those who served their country and is a place for reflection and remembrance.
