Dojo 54 is a family-oriented community club founded by Paul McGuinness, a 6th Dan and a BJA Level 5 Coach/UKCC Level 4 coach. McGuinness has been involved in Judo since he was 8 years old and holds an MSc in Advanced Sports Coaching Practise and a BSc in Fitness, Health & Exercise. All the coaches at Dojo 54 are passionate about Judo and the club, and they aim to provide educational, fun, and exciting classes for all ages and levels.
Judo, a martial art developed by Prof. Jigaro Kano in 1882, is the primary focus at Dojo 54. Judo involves using your partner's weight against them to throw them to the floor, where various techniques such as pins, chokes, and armlocks can be applied. Through Judo, students develop balance, coordination, agility, strength, and self-esteem.
It also instils a sense of control for both the mind and body. Judo has a moral code that every judoka should live by.
Dojo 54 offers a variety of classes for different age groups. For children under 8 years old, classes focus on developing physical literacy competencies while also improving judo skills. These classes are challenging and fun, aiming to make kids better movers and thinkers. Classes for children aged 8–12 years build on the foundation of physical literacy and focus more on improving judo skills.
