The Discovery Diver course offered by Sutton Coldfield Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Club is the perfect option for those who are short on time but still want to embark on an exciting scuba diving journey. Open to individuals from the age of 10, this course is a subset of the BSAC Ocean Diver course and serves as an intermediate step towards earning an Ocean Diver qualification.
With three theory modules, three pool or sheltered water modules, and at least two open-water dives, the Discovery Diver course ensures that participants feel comfortable and competent in various diving environments. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will start by getting comfortable breathing underwater in a pool or sheltered water and then gradually progress to safely diving in open water.
As a qualified Discovery Diver, you can enjoy diving in controlled conditions up to a depth of 12m, under the direct supervision of a Dive Leader or higher-grade diver. Furthermore, the use of breathing gas mixtures of up to 36% Nitrox is permitted, which enhances safety on dives. However, it's important to note that Discovery Divers are not qualified for dives requiring mandatory decompression stops.
To kickstart your Discovery Diver course, you have the option to submit a learn to dive enquiry or book a Try Dive with a BSAC club. Training at your local BSAC club allows you the flexibility to learn at your own pace and attend club training sessions with other BSAC members. By becoming an open water diver, you can also participate in social events at the club and start building a network of friends to go diving with.
One of the advantages of opting for the Discovery Diver course at a BSAC centre is the shorter time commitment – usually taking only 1–2 days to complete. The only things you need to get started are a swimsuit and towel. However, you may want to consider investing in your own mask and snorkel for a more personalised experience.
After completing the Discovery Diver course, you're only a few modules away from achieving an Ocean Diver qualification, which grants you the opportunity to dive to depths of up to 20m. If this exciting adventure resonates with you, feel free to visit the BSAC website or get in touch with a local BSAC centre for further information.
