The organisation provides robust competition pathways, including the World Games held on a four-year cycle in both summer and winter sports. Awareness and funding for Special Olympics are still not as widespread as for other sporting events, so the organisation is working towards increasing its visibility and support.
Intellectual disability refers to difficulties in performing basic tasks, such as reading, handling money, or using public transport. However, this does not mean that individuals with intellectual disabilities cannot learn or succeed. They may simply learn differently or require additional time and support. Special Olympics Australia recognises the hidden talents that many individuals with intellectual disabilities possess, and sports can help them uncover and showcase these abilities.
An example of the impact of Special Olympics is 15-year-old Brittney Neill, who participated in the 2016 Special Olympics World Summer Games in LA. Despite being the youngest competitor on the Australian team, she won two bronze and one silver medal in athletics. Brittney's story highlights the determination and potential of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
