Dancing Convolutions

Dancing Convolutions is a ballet and dance school located in Oxford, New Zealand. Founded and led by acclaimed Dance Artist, Choreographer, and Teacher, Sgolne Tarte, the school offers a unique blend of ballet, contemporary dance, and butoh. With a focus on dance narrative, interpretation, improvisation, and choreographic processes, Dancing Convolutions aims to provide a holistic approach to dance education.

At Dancing Convolutions, students can expect a nurturing and inclusive environment where they can explore their love for dance and develop their skills. The school offers regular non-syllabus adult ballet classes taught by Sgolne Tarte, who is a qualified ISTD teacher with a Diploma in Dance Pedagogy. These classes cater to a range of levels, from improvers to intermediate/advanced dancers.

The classes are held at various locations in Oxford. On Tuesdays, there is a mixed-level class from 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm at St Matthews' Parish Centre in Grandpont. In the evenings, there are intermediate/advanced classes from 6:15 pm to 7:45 pm at Summertown United Reformed Church on Banbury Road. Additionally, there is a Thursday class from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at St Luke's Church Hall on Canning Crescent.

On Fridays, there is a mixed-level class from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm also at Summertown United Reformed Church. These classes are available for both in-person and online attendance.

Sgolne Tarte brings her training in the French School of ballet to her teaching, focusing on technical elements such as posture, placement, articulation of the feet and lower legs, fluidity of the upper body, and precision in the orientation of the body in space. She aims to instil a sense of joy in movement and to help students explore the subtleties of intention through dance.

In addition to regular classes, Sgolne Tarte also occasionally offers guest-teaching opportunities at established dance schools in Oxford, including Ballet in Small Spaces, Oxford Academy of Dance, East Oxford School of Ballet, and Oxford City School of Dance. With her extensive creative background, she is open to designing and offering creative movement workshops for youth and community groups as well.
