DanceSportWA Chairwoman, Judy Pegus, has expressed her enthusiasm for this collaboration, which seeks to ensure that DanceSport becomes a sport that embraces everyone. DanceSport WA is already dedicated to offering all-abilities programs and competitions, expanding its community influence and becoming eligible for funding from the state government.
With this partnership, Special Olympics athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their incredible skills at a national level once a year through DanceSport competitions. This integration of Special Olympics competitions within DanceSport national and state competitions is a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and diversity in sports.
Corene Strauss, Special Olympics Australia's CEO, has voiced her excitement about the new opportunities that this partnership presents for Special Olympics athletes. Australia is proud to be one of the first countries in the global Special Olympics movement to introduce DanceSport programs.
To demonstrate the unbelievable talent and dedication of these athletes, a DanceSport demonstration event will be featured at the Special Olympics National Games in 2022. This event will pave the way for DanceSport to become an official sport at the subsequent National Games in 2026 and World Games in 2027.
