In an exciting development, a partnership has been formed between Special Olympics Australia and DanceSport Australia. DanceSportWA Chairwoman, Judy Pegus, emphasised the importance of this partnership in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the world of sports. Already offering successful all-abilities programs and competitions, DanceSport WA has significantly expanded its community reach and now qualifies for state government funding.
This groundbreaking partnership has now officially integrated Special Olympics competitions into DanceSport national and state competitions, allowing Special Olympics athletes the incredible opportunity to compete at a national level. Alongside their participation in the Special Olympics National Games, which are held every four years, athletes will now have the chance to showcase their talent through DanceSport competitions once a year.
Corene Strauss, CEO of Special Olympics Australia, expressed her excitement about this new opportunity for Special Olympics athletes. Australia stands as one of the leading countries in the global Special Olympics movement, being among the first to introduce DanceSport programs. The upcoming Special Olympics National Games in 2022 will include a sensational DanceSport demonstration event, paving the way for DanceSport to officially become a sport at the subsequent National Games in 2026 and World Games in 2027.
