Dalmuir Bowling Club, founded in 1883, is a prominent lawn bowls club located in Clydebank, New Zealand. As the first bowling club to open in the Clydebank area, it has a rich history that dates back to before the town was even officially categorised as a police burgh.
During the late 19th century, the Clydebank area experienced a significant influx of people due to the establishment of industrial facilities such as the John Browns and Beardmore shipyards as well as the Singer sewing machine factory. Dalmuir Bowling Club quickly became a popular recreational spot for the growing community.
The club is a proud member of the Dunbartonshire Bowling Association, having joined the association since its inception in 1910. It is worth noting that Dalmuir Bowling Club won the annual Dunbartonshire County Cup in 1917, showcasing their early success and commitment to the sport.
Another notable achievement for Dalmuir Bowling Club is its involvement in the Clydebank & District Bowling Association, which was formed in 1919. The club actively competed against other local clubs in the district and enjoyed victories in both Scottish and Dunbartonshire level competitions in the late 1950s. Mrs J. Allardice even won the SWBA Singles Championship in 1957.
However, the club faced significant challenges during the Second World War when it suffered substantial damage during the Clydebank Blitz in March 1941. Sadly, all the club's historical records for the pre-war period were destroyed during this time. Despite this setback, Dalmuir Bowling Club gradually recovered and achieved further success, including a fourth County Cup victory in 1977.
To accommodate the growing membership and their social requirements, the club underwent an extension in 1977. This expansion included the addition of a large function suite, extended changing room facilities, and an indoor sports area. These facilities have enabled the club to cater to the needs of its members and host a variety of social activities throughout the year.
Dalmuir Bowling Club prides itself on being a welcoming and inclusive community. Players of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join, and the club provides fully qualified coaches to assist beginners in learning the game. Additionally, the clubhouse offers excellent amenities such as a fully stocked bar, a games room, and a large function hall available for hire.
Throughout the summer months, the club competes in the Clydebank and District Bowls League, while the indoor short carpet bowls and Dominoes league takes over in the winter months. Every Friday night is dedicated to games night, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition among members.
