Representing his country on the global stage. Dagenham Amateur Boxing Club, or affectionately known as the 'Daggers', has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1950. Originally located in the grounds of the old school in Dagenham, the club had a promising start with its first National ABA Champion, Johnny Maloney, winning consecutive titles in the 1950/51 and 1951/52 seasons.
Throughout the years, Dagenham ABC has produced numerous champions in various categories. Notable names include Kevin Mitchell, who captured all four Schoolboy Titles and went on to win a National Senior ABA Title at the age of just 18. His success continued in the professional world, going undefeated in 29 fights and winning British & Commonwealth Super Featherweight Titles. His younger brother, Vincent, has also followed in his footsteps as an undefeated professional.
The club has also been home to other notable boxers such as Bobby Ward, who was a multi-titlist in the Junior category and the last British boxer to defeat Amir Khan as an amateur. James Cole, Alan Southwick, and Michael McCarthy are just a few of the other talented boxers who have achieved success under the guidance of Dagenham ABC.
In recent years, the club has seen promising young boxers like Kerim Agius and his brother Tariq Agius, who have been crowned champions in various competitions. Lawrence Okolie, a relative novice with just over 20 fights, has already qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as a heavyweight. He is expected to be a strong contender and is poised to represent Team GB proudly.
