About

Lisa, the organiser, is thrilled to invite the sports community to explore The Cuckoo Trail in Hailsham, United Kingdom. Stretching 14 miles, this cycle park is perfect for walkers and cyclists of all ages. Mostly traffic-free, it forms part of the National Cycle Network – Route 21. The trail follows the old 'Cuckoo Line' railway, from Heathfield to Shinewater Park, passing through Horam, Hailsham, and Polegate.

The trail is a green corridor abundant with wildlife, featuring sections managed for wildflowers and wooded, shady areas. Along the way, there are stunning countryside views, rest points, benches, picnic tables, and sculptures. Highlights include Victorian brick arch bridges, particularly impressive at Heathfield Tunnel.

Wildlife lovers, take note—May is perfect for spotting butterflies like the orange-tip. Look out for bullfinches, lesser whitethroats, cuckoos, and weasels. Listen for the green woodpecker’s call and songs from other birds. The trail is home to wild garlic between Hellingly and Horam, and orchids bloom along the path in early summer.

The Cuckoo Trail offers gentle gradients and a sealed surface, making it accessible in all weather for walkers, cyclists, and disabled users. Dogs and cyclists are welcome, with a reminder to be respectful of others. Horse riders can use specific sections between Heathfield and the A271 at Horsebridge, and from Ersham Road in Hailsham to Hampden Park.

Access is easy, with train stations at Polegate and Hampden Park. There are bus routes and car parks at Heathfield, Horam, Hellingly, Hailsham, Polegate, and Hampden Park. Horsebox parking is available at Hellingly Cuckoo Trail Car Park.

The Cuckoo Trail, originally a railway opened in 1880, got its name from releasing the first cuckoo of spring at Heathfield Fair. The line closed in 1968 but was revived in 1990 through a partnership with Sustrans. Now jointly managed by Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council, it's a fantastic recreational space.

For more information or any inquiries, contact the Countryside Maintenance Team via email. The trail also offers accommodation and hosts various events, providing a full experience of its natural beauty and activities. Join us and enjoy all that The Cuckoo Trail has to offer!
