About

Welcome to Craigieburn Trails – Castle Hill, a network of dual-use mountain biking and tramping tracks located in the beautiful Castle Hill Basin area. Developed by the Castle Hill Community Association, in collaboration with Ground Effect, a local MTB clothing manufacturer, and T5 Contracting, a single-track specialist, these trails offer a thrilling experience for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Craigieburn Trails project has seen the construction of four tracks: Hogs Back, Sidle 73, Dracophyllum Flat (which has been upgraded and rerouted), and Coal Pit Spur. These tracks cover a total distance of 24 km and provide an intermediate mountain bike standard. Additionally, there are a few short linking sections of ski-field road that connect Flock Hill to Castle Hill.

These tracks complement the existing trail network within Craigieburn Forest and Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Parks, enhancing the outdoor recreational opportunities in the area. The Craigieburn Trails team has plans for further track development in the Castle Hill Basin and will collaborate with the Department of Conservation to bring these ideas to life.

The Castle Hill Community Association extends its gratitude to Cactus Outdoor, a local clothing and outdoor equipment manufacturer, for their generous support during the Spring 2014 work party. Their donation of spot prizes for volunteers has been greatly appreciated. Cactus Outdoor's gear, known for its durability, has already been put to the test by the Craigieburn Trails team during track building activities.

The dedicated team behind Craigieburn Trails includes Anthony, Bill, Conor, Dallis, Ian, JohnO, Paul, Sean, Simon, and the wider Castle Hill community. They are committed to expanding the mountain bike track offerings in the Castle Hill Basin. To support their efforts and ensure your continued enjoyment at Castle Hill, consider making a donation towards future track development.

Please note that some Craigieburn Trails may be closed during the winter months due to frost heave. This closure is necessary to preserve the integrity of the tracks and minimise the need for extensive maintenance later on. Respect for these closures is appreciated, as it allows volunteers to focus on new track development and allocate resources effectively. It is also worth mentioning that most of the Craigieburn Trails are not suitable for all-weather use, especially after rain or when they appear muddy.

For the latest track status, visit our website or check the Trails page. We also encourage all visitors to abide by the MTB'ers Code of Conduct and respect the natural environment and other trail users.

Join us at Craigieburn Trails – Castle Hill and immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings while experiencing the thrill of mountain biking.
