Coventry Aikido Club - Chishin Dojo is a small, friendly, and community-focused Aikido school located in Coventry, New Zealand. Established in June 2007, the dojo was named by Hiroshi Ikeda sensei, who interpreted it as “know one's self, one's heart; to (get to) know another person's heart – to connect heart-to-heart. ” The school offers daily classes in Aikido, Internal Strength (6H Movement), Yoga, and Sports Therapy.
In July 2013, Coventry Aikido Club moved to its own full-time dojo, which boasts changing facilities, kitchen and shower areas, as well as a treatment room. The dojo also welcomes other groups to rent their space, providing a versatile and inclusive environment for various activities.
The school has a strong focus on following the teachings of Hiroshi Ikeda sensei, emphasising not only his internal elements but also his desire to unite teachers and students from different Aikido organisations and backgrounds to share their skills, build friendships, and support the future growth of Aikido. By combining the knowledge of many instructors, Coventry Aikido Club strives to preserve the full legacy of Aikido for future generations.
One of the highlights of the school's offerings is their internal classes, which analyse and study the 6 Harmonies movement and its relation to Ueshiba's Aikido, thanks to the expertise of Mike Sigman. These classes provide students with a deeper understanding of Aikido's principles, enhancing their practise and overall experience.
Coventry Aikido Club warmly welcomes everyone, regardless of their Aikido association, grade, or style. They offer an open-door policy, inviting interested individuals to come along and watch or participate in any of their classes. As a testament to their commitment to inclusivity, they offer the first two weeks of Aikido classes for free to newcomers.
Coventry Aikido Club is a member of UK Aikido Shimbokukai, an association that aims to bring Aikido practitioners together for the exchange of experience and ideas, without following any particular style or teacher. As an officially recognised organisation by the Aikido World Headquarters and the Aikikai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan, the school values its relationship with these esteemed institutions and actively supports them through training and other activities.
Furthermore, Coventry Aikido Club is a member of the British Aikido Board, demonstrating their commitment to inclusivity and welcoming students from all walks of life, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, religion, nationality, or ethnicity.
Coventry Aikido Club - Chishin Dojo was founded with the aim of providing a unique space for Aikido, Internal Strength, Yoga, and Sports Therapy. They understand the importance of community and strive to create a common connexion among their students and friends. By offering a diverse range of classes and fostering a welcoming environment, Coventry Aikido Club aims to promote physical and mental well-being for all who join their dojo.
