The Coventry Godiva Harriers Wheelchair Racing Academy is an incredible training program that was established back in 2011. It welcomes athletes of all abilities and experience levels, starting from the young age of 8 years old and up. The academy focuses on wheelchair racing events, encompassing distances ranging from 100m all the way up to full marathons.
For those new athletes who are keen to get involved, the academy offers chairs for you to try out, allowing you to explore and find the seating position that suits you best. Additionally, during those chilly winter months, indoor training rollers are provided to ensure you can keep warm and focus on your technical sessions.
What makes the Coventry Godiva Harriers Wheelchair Racing Academy really stand out is its impressive roster of talented wheelchair racers. Amongst them are British, European, and World Record holders, who proudly represent both Coventry Godiva and Great Britain. These exceptional athletes compete in a wide variety of competitions, including open meets, national championships, internationals, the London Mini-marathon for juniors, 10 km races, half-marathons, and Paratriathlons.
Without a doubt, the highlight of the year for the Academy is the Coventry Godiva Classic. This event attracts wheelchair racers from all corners of the country for an IPC sanctioned competition. With electronic timing in place, it's a truly thrilling experience for both participants and spectators alike.
The Academy warmly welcomes athletes with various classifications, including T33-T34 (Cerebral Palsy, Stroke) and T51-T54 (Spinal Injury, Spina Bifida, Leg Amputee). It's a place where everyone is encouraged to come together and push themselves to be the best they can be.
Training sessions for the Coventry Godiva Harriers Wheelchair Racing Academy take place at the track every Wednesday at 6:30pm, as well as Sundays at 3:00pm. However, please do remember to check the Warwick University booking schedule just in case there are any changes to these session times. In addition to these regular training sessions, there are also road training sessions available on Mondays from March to October. Plus, keep an eye out for occasional sessions at Draycote Water on Saturdays.
