Contemporary Dance Club in Woking, known as Surrey Community Dance, is excited to promote a local Contemporary Dance event that is sure to captivate and inspire dance enthusiasts in the area.
With roots dating back to the 20th century, Contemporary Dance combines elements from Modern, Jazz, Lyrical, and Classical Ballet, making it a unique and dynamic form of expression. This dance style places a strong emphasis on ballet technique, which serves as a foundation for learning Contemporary technique.
Thanks to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), who launched their own Contemporary syllabus in April 2019, dancers now have a structured and comprehensive curriculum to guide their training. Renowned dancer, choreographer, and ex-Rambert school Principal, Dr Ross McKim, played a pivotal role in developing this syllabus. Shani, an instructor at the club, was fortunate to receive three years of training under Dr McKim's expert tutelage at the Rambert School. Her experience has given her a deep understanding of how the movement should feel and be presented.
The ISTD Contemporary syllabus focuses on five essential themes: falls, walks, contractions, spirals, and release. Through a combination of floor work and travelling enchainments, students explore these elements and also have the opportunity to engage in improvisation. In addition, there is a set Dance at Intermediate Foundation level, which further enhances their repertoire. The syllabus aims to provide a solid foundation in Contemporary dance, ensuring dancers develop both technically and creatively.
Currently, Surrey Community Dance offers three levels of classes: Intermediate Foundation and Advanced 1. As students progress and demonstrate their readiness, they will have the opportunity to take the ISTD Graded exam. In the meantime, students will have the chance to learn unset Contemporary routines, delve deeper into the themes and elements, and even explore improvisation and choreography.
The dance classes take place at the beautiful St Marks Church, conveniently located at 37 Westfield Road, Woking GU22 9NQ.
