Coastal Model Car Racing Club

The Coastal Model Car Racing Club, based in Ipswich, Suffolk, is known as Suffolk's leading club for 1/10 scale radio-controlled electric model racing cars. The club was formed in 1997 with the aim of promoting the new class of “scale” radio-controlled touring cars. Initially, the club held meetings at the Orwell School playground in Felixstowe, which is where the name “Coastal” originated from. However, in order to be more centrally located for the majority of its members, the club later moved to the Indoor Cricket Stadium in Ipswich, which allowed for year-round racing.

During its early years, the Coastal Model Car Racing Club acquired computer race timing software and equipment, similar to that used in full-scale racing events such as Formula One and the British Touring Car Championship. This allowed for accurate timing and positioning of the racing cars. In 2002, the club took a significant step forward by designing and building the first purpose-built model car asphalt racing circuit in Suffolk. This circuit, located at Bourne Hill in the grounds of the Suffolk Ski Centre, features multiple layouts, providing a variety of different tracks for racing.

The Coastal Model Car Racing Club's facility at Bourne Hill includes the Scale Touring Car circuit as well as an Off-Road Buggy track, which was added in 2006. In 2013, the off-road track underwent further development and was transformed into an all-weather track by covering the area with astro turf. Both the on-road and off-road racing circuits utilise state-of-the-art computer-controlled race timing equipment, which accurately counts the laps for each car to 1/100th of a second. Real-time race positions and laps can be viewed on a monitor in the clubhouse, and printouts with full qualifying and race details, including individual laps, are posted on a results board for competitors and spectators to see.

The Coastal Model Car Racing Club provides a range of facilities for its members, including free parking, indoor pitting with workbenches, chairs, and 240v power, a kitchen with amenities such as a kettle, microwave, and fridge, as well as tea and coffee available for a small donation. Male and female toilets are provided, along with an air compressor for cleaning cars off. Additionally, there is an on-site store that offers wheels, tyres, and spare parts for sale. The club aims to provide a comfortable and convenient environment for its members, ensuring an enjoyable and seamless racing experience.

The Coastal Model Car Racing Club currently races several 1:10th electric classes, including 2WD Off-road, 4WD Off-road, Touring Cars, and the Tamiya Class. The Tamiya Class allows for any Tamiya plastic chassis car to participate, including models like M05, TT01E, and Grasshopper, except the TAO7. It is worth noting that the 2WD off-road class is currently the most popular, but all classes receive strong support.
