About
Clongowes Golf Club, located in Clane, is a prestigious nine-hole golf course accredited by the Golfing Union of Ireland. The history of golf at Clongowes dates back to the early 20th century, with mentions of a five-hole course in the Clongownian magazine. The current course was established in 1965 under the direction of Fr Frank Joy, SJ, and renowned Golf Course Architect Eddie Hackett.
Despite initial plans for an 18-hole course, the golf course we know today was donated by the Minister of the farm, with the support of Fr Ray Lawler and other key figures in the Clongowes community. The course has since become a beloved feature of the school, hosting various competitions and events throughout the years.
One such event is the annual Past v Present Golf Match, initiated in 1978 by J. Brendan Prendiville, which celebrates the school's success in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup. The match is played at prestigious venues such as Portmarnock Golf Club, with a return fixture at Clongowes.
In addition to hosting events, Clongowes Golf Club also fosters young talent, as demonstrated by the success of Mikey Mina Ronayne in the Leinster Under 15 matchplay final. The club is committed to providing a welcoming environment for both experienced golfers and beginners, allowing all members to enjoy the beautiful parkland setting and challenging course.
Whether it be friendly competitions, historical events, or individual achievements, Clongowes Golf Club continues to uphold its legacy as a prominent golfing venue in Clane.
