Sarah, the organiser at City of Newport Gymnastics Academy Limited (CNGA), wants to share a note with the sports community. CNGA is a friendly and athlete-focused academy based in Newport, UK. As a registered member of Welsh and British Gymnastics, CNGA specialises in Women’s Artistic and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics.
Sarah and her dedicated team of coaches and volunteers aim to create a welcoming environment for gymnasts of all ages and abilities. CNGA offers a range of disciplines within British Gymnastics, including Gymnastics-For-All (GFA) programmes for all ages. The academy boasts a state-of-the-art facility with all the necessary Olympic apparatus, including a competition sprung floor. With around 300 members yearly, Sarah is backed by four qualified coaches, volunteer parents, a Club Welfare Officer, and ten sports leaders. Classes run from Monday to Friday in the late afternoon and early evening.
Gymnasts start at CNGA from age four, as long as they are in full-time education (Reception class). The structured class system for girls includes beginner classes for Reception to Year 2, and an Improver class for Year 3 and above. Girls with exceptional ability follow a different structure, training for one hour a week initially, and up to three hours if selected for the competition group.
Girls aged eight and above join a different recreational group, training for two hours a week. Exceptional girls might be invited to join the competition squad.
Boys in Reception to Year 2 also train for one hour a week, progressing to two hours per week once they start juniors at school. Boys with exceptional skills may join the competition group, training for nine hours a week.
Beginner classes for boys and girls aged 5 to 7 introduce basic floor skills, dance, bar skills, floor beam and competition beam, and vaulting onto a block. These one-hour weekly sessions include a warm-up, stretch, main session, cool down, and discussion. Improver sessions for boys and girls last two hours a week, including a warm-up, pre-stretch, and skill development.
