About

City Brothers Football Club, located in Mackay, is a renowned sports club with a rich history. Established in 1983, the club was formed by Doug Osborne with the assistance of Peter Zahra, Brian Amor, Jim Curtis, Andy Gillan, and Peter Dunne. The club initially attracted players who had recently arrived in Mackay from various parts of Australia, as well as players from the former Brothers Soccer Club, which had ceased operations in 1982.

In its first pre-season competition, City Brothers Soccer Club introduced country strips, providing an opportunity for country colts to progress to the top grade. Inspired by the Scottish heritage of some players, the club selected blue and white as its colours. However, after the 1983 season, the club faced a significant challenge as several players, including the former Brothers players, departed for Wanderers. This dispute put the future of City Brothers at risk.

Despite the uncertainty, a small group of dedicated individuals, including Brian and Maree Amor, Andy and Angy Gillan, and Pat McGraw, stepped up to ensure the club's continuity. With the minimum requirement of five members to form a committee, they enlisted the help of John Jamieson as the club's coach. Under the guidance of Andy, Brian, and John, the teams crafted by the club went on to win Grand Finals in 1984, 1985, and 1986, solidifying City Brothers' place in the history of Mackay football.

The dedication and perseverance of the club members and supporters have been instrumental in City Brothers' growth. In 2019, the club was fortunate to receive a grant from the state government, amounting to $407,000, specifically for the construction of a female facility. The grant was secured through the efforts of John Nugent and Steven Calicetto, and the project is being professionally and cost-effectively managed by James Carless. The facility, encompassing a mother's room, a gym, male and female bathrooms with showers, 2 change rooms, and a kiosk, spans an impressive 406.

City Brothers Football Club continues to strive for excellence by pursuing additional grants and actively engaging its sponsors and members. Ultimately, the club envisions becoming the premier club in Mackay. The support and contributions from sponsors and members, including those who have purchased bricks for the new clubhouse, are vital in achieving the club's goals.

As construction nears completion, an eagerly anticipated grand opening ceremony is slated to take place before the start of the 2021 season. This celebration will be open to all, offering an opportunity for the community to come together and witness the remarkable progress of City Brothers Football Club.

City Brothers FC stands as a testament to the enduring spirit, camaraderie, and commitment to excellence that define Australian football. With its rich history and state-of-the-art facilities, the club continues to shape the future of football in Mackay.
