About

Welcome to the Christchurch Womens Rugby FC! Founded in 1863, our club holds the distinction of being the longest-running rugby club in the world. Located at Christchurch Park, we have been playing rugby for over 150 years and have contributed to the success of All Blacks and winning provincial teams for more than a century.

The game of rugby was introduced to New Zealand by RJS Harman in 1850, who had learned the game while attending Rugby School in England where it originated. Harman and others played a hybrid version of rugby in various locations in Christchurch, including near Christ's College. In an iconic game held in Latimer Square in August 1863, teams from Christ's College and “Gentlemen of Christchurch” battled to a draw, leading to the formation of the Christchurch Football Club on 3rd September 1863.

Initially, there were differences in the rules played by the Christchurch Football Club compared to other clubs. For instance, they introduced a rule where the ball was bounced every five yards, and teams played with 22 players, two more than the official Rugby School rules. These differences were eventually resolved when the sport's governing body in England created a standard set of rules for rugby.

Over the years, the Christchurch Football Club has produced numerous high-calibre players. Thirty-four of our members have been selected to represent the All Blacks, including five who served as captains. Moreover, more than 230 senior players have represented Canterbury and other provinces throughout New Zealand.

At Christchurch Womens Rugby FC, we are committed to promoting the growth and development of women's rugby in our community. We offer a friendly and inclusive environment for women of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to experienced players. Our club provides opportunities for training, competition, and camaraderie, fostering a love for the game and a sense of belonging.
