Children and Youth Dance Theatre

Tom here, reaching out to share some exciting information about the Children and Youth Dance Theatre (CYDT) in North York. Founded back in 1993, CYDT has been a fantastic space for talented Black and minority children and youth to train in dance. Over the years, they've earned quite the reputation, both locally and internationally.

CYDT offers a variety of programs to suit different interests and commitment levels. They've got Recreational, Competitive, and Performance programs, with classes in ballet, acro, jazz, hip hop, afro-caribbean, tap, modern, and lyrical dance styles. The goal is to help dancers build coordination, rhythm, strength, posture, and flexibility, along with teaching them commitment, discipline, and teamwork. The dancers here are always encouraged to challenge themselves and aim for their best.

For those just looking to dance for fun, the recreational program is perfect. It's open to kids starting at age three and lets them choose how many hours they want to dance each week. They get to showcase what they've learned in mini-recitals in December and a big recital in June. If you're into more serious training, the competitive program is the way to go. It involves 5-8 hours of weekly practice and lets dancers compete in various competitions across Ontario, pushing their skills both as individuals and as a team.

Jazz, tap, afro-caribbean, acro, modern, and lyrical dance classes are also on offer. Jazz has those sharp, sassy moves, while tap is all about rhythm and musicality. Afro-caribbean dance spices things up with a comedic and dramatic twist, and hip-hop is there for anyone who loves urban dance and rap music. Lyrical dance blends ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and modern dance for a really expressive style.
