Phil, the organiser at Cheltenham Croquet Club, wanted to share a little about the club with the sports community. Nestled in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the club's been around since 1870 and is one of the largest and oldest in Britain. It features 10 full-size lawns, 2 half-size lawns, and a practice area.
Phil welcomes players of all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned pros, including those at county and international standard. The club has been honoured to host major events like the 2005 World Championships and is gearing up for the 2023 European Team Championship.
You can play all croquet variations here—handicap, advanced, golf, short, and one ball—year-round. Even in winter, the hardy members keep the game going. The main season runs April to September, packed with club competitions.
Newcomers are always warmly welcomed. Phil organises free taster days during summer for anyone curious about the sport. For a small fee, prospective members can join three introductory coaching sessions. Once you’re in, free tutorials and coaching keep the learning going.
Phil also arranges corporate sessions, perfect for team-building with a mix of strategy and friendly competition. Businesses and local groups can reach out to the club's Secretary via email for more details.
The club is proud to house Croquet England’s headquarters, the sport's national governing body, further cementing its status. It's also a member of the South West Federation of Croquet Clubs.
One newcomer shared how easily they integrated into the club through coaching sessions and playing various game formats, thanks to the welcoming environment created by Phil and the team.
Cheltenham Croquet Club is a lively and friendly community where croquet enthusiasts can dive into the sport. With its rich history, top-notch facilities, and inviting atmosphere, it’s a key spot for croquet fans of all levels in Cheltenham.
