Charity Lakes is situated in the stunning Wensum valley, covering 32 acres of beautiful and peaceful surroundings. It features three excellent lakes and half a mile of the river Wensum, offering our members a variety of fishing experiences. The fishery has a rich history and was once home to Norfolk's largest mirror carp, named Baby Face, weighing an impressive 53. 10 pounds.
Today, Charity Lakes continues to offer exceptional carp fishing, including the opportunity to catch the elusive and highly sought-after 'Large Norfolk Carp'. Additionally, the fishery is well-known for its exceptional tench fishing, particularly during the early morning when the traditional float lift method can be utilised.
With a committed stocking programme in place over the years, Charity Lakes has secured a bright future for the fishery. It is now home to five forty-pound carp, with the beautiful large common expected to reach 50 pounds in the next few years, reaffirming Charity Lakes' status as one of Norfolk's top big fish venues.
While Charity Lakes is known for its impressive carp and tench, many members may not be fully aware of the significant role the fishery plays in the local communities of Lenwade and Great Witchingham. The Great Witchingham Fuel Allotment Charity owns and manages the land where Charity Lakes is located. This charity was established in 1811 by the Enclosure Commissioners, with the aim of supporting individuals in need who resided in the parish of Great Witchingham. Today, the charity continues to provide relief to those facing hardship or distress within the community.
The lakes themselves were formed as a result of mineral extraction in the mid-1980s. Following excavation, the land was landscaped to create the lakes, which are now utilised for angling. The income generated from fishery membership fees plays a crucial role in supporting the Great Witchingham Fuel Allotment Charity's mission to provide aid to individuals in need within the parish.
