About

Carlile Swimming Killarney Heights, a renowned swimming club in Sydney, has a rich history that dates back to 1946. Founded by Forbes and Ursula Carlile, this club has been at the forefront of swimming, introducing teaching and coaching methods that have been embraced worldwide.

The journey of Carlile Swimming began at the picturesque Palm Beach Rock Pool, where Forbes Carlile first made a name for himself. Just two years later, he became Australia's first Olympic coach, marking the beginning of a remarkable legacy. To learn more about the fascinating history of Australian swimming and the role played by Carlile Swimming, you can watch the captivating documentary “The Spirit Of Australian Swimming” on Foxtel, featuring the iconic Ian Thorpe. The documentary showcases the world's first pace clock at Palm Beach Rock Pool and highlights the 1952 Australian Olympic Team, led by Forbes Carlile and gold medallist John Davies. It also acknowledges the achievements of Forbes and Ursula Carlile, as well as world record holder Terry Gathercole, who have all been honoured in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

From teaching babies how to swim to nurturing Olympians, the Carlile name has left an indelible mark on Australian swimming. They continue to offer world-class swimming lessons for children and have introduced techniques that are now employed globally. Forbes and Ursula Carlile have played a pivotal role in shaping modern coaching methods. In fact, they established Australia's first commercial swimming school in 1955 and later constructed Sydney's inaugural indoor heated teaching pool. They even pioneered the practice of teaching babies to swim, which has gained widespread popularity.

Their innovative coaching approach, which encompasses heart rate monitoring, interval training, lane ropes, and training goggles, has revolutionised competitive swimming. Notably, Forbes Carlile holds the distinction of coaching at an Olympics prior to competing, having led Australia's swimming team in 1948 before participating in the modern pentathlon in 1952. The coaching prowess of the Carliles has produced numerous champions such as Karen Moras, Gail Neall, Jan Murphy, Terry Gathercole, John Ryan, John Bennett, and Jenny Turrall. However, their most exceptional protégé is undoubtedly the legendary Shane Gould. At a mere 15 years old, Shane held every freestyle world record from 100m to 1500m, an extraordinary feat that is unlikely to be surpassed. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, Shane secured three gold medals, all in world record times, along with a silver and a bronze, making her the most decorated swimmer of that Olympics.

The team groomed by Forbes and Ursula Carlile stands as the most successful in the history of Australian Swimming. With over 250 Australian Open Championship gold medals, more than 50 Australian representatives, and eight world record holders, their contributions are unparalleled. Such remarkable achievements have rightfully earned Forbes and Ursula Carlile a revered position in the prestigious International Swimming Hall of Fame, distinguishing them as the only coaching duo, who happen to be husband and wife, to receive this esteemed honour.
