About
Cardiff Fencing Club, the oldest in Wales, welcomes fencers of all abilities to a social and competitive environment. With success at Commonwealth, British, and Welsh levels, it’s the place to be for those keen to compete.
Meeting year-round at the Welsh Institute for Sport in Sophia Gardens, aside from Christmas, they offer consistent training. Members can choose from Epee, Sabre, or Foil disciplines. Epee is like a modern Rapier, Sabre is linked to cutlasses or cavalry swords, and Foil follows age-old fencing master conventions.
The club is part of Welsh and British Fencing, ensuring top-notch coaching and resources. Led by Professor Peter Stewart (B. A. F) and Maitre d'Escrime Anne Stewart, a former international foilist and Welsh Champion, the team also includes Andrew Shearn, Nick Charles, and Alistair Brook as coaches, with Kirsty Lewis as the Welfare Officer.
Training sessions are on Wednesday evenings, 8.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., with car parking, changing rooms, and showers available at the venue. Joining the club requires a £40.00 fee, covering British Fencing affiliation, insurance, and the first four weeks of tuition and club fees. Afterward, there's a £15.00 monthly fee via Standing Order.
Beginners can borrow equipment and clothing, like masks and swords, but should get their own gear over time, with the club offering advice on purchases. Competitive fencers will have access to full electric sets for training.
To join, contact Peter Stewart via email or phone. The club upholds British Fencing Safeguarding Policies to ensure a safe, inclusive atmosphere for all. With its rich history and expert coaching, Cardiff Fencing Club is perfect for anyone looking to improve their fencing skills and achieve their goals.
