Cambridge University Karate Club

The club's history dates back to its formation in 1976 by Charles Levitt and Simon Giszter, who noticed the absence of a karate club at Cambridge University. With the guidance of Bob Poynton from the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), they established the Cambridge University Shotokan Karate Club (CUSKC), which later became known as the Cambridge University Karate Club (CUKC). From its early days, the club attracted many members and quickly became a thriving community.

Under the leadership of Chief Instructor Ken Hori, 6th Dan, who himself began his karate journey at CUKC, the club has flourished and achieved remarkable success. Ken Hori has an impressive competition record and brings a wealth of experience to the club. His dedication and expertise have contributed to the club's growth and reputation.

One of the core values of CUKC is inclusivity, and the club warmly welcomes individuals of all skill levels. Whether you are a beginner or have previous experience in karate, CUKC encourages you to join. Many of the club's members started their karate journey as novices, and the club provides a supportive and encouraging environment for their development.

CUKC believes in setting achievable goals for its members, and it is possible to attain the first-grade black belt (shodan) within 3 to 4 years of training. The club's training sessions are designed to build skills progressively and ensure continuous improvement. Additionally, since Shotokan karate is practised worldwide, CUKC members can continue their karate journey beyond their university years.

The club has a strong presence in regional, national, and international competitions, consistently achieving commendable results. CUKC takes pride in its competitive spirit and encourages members to participate in various events to showcase their skills and represent the club.

CUKC offers several resources and support to its members, including grading opportunities, a comprehensive terminology guide, access to relevant documents, and valuable links to further karate-related information. In line with the club's commitment to growth and development, CUKC provides regular training sessions, which are held during term-time. The Cambridge University Karate Club has built a strong legacy as one of the most successful sports clubs at Cambridge University, winning seventeen consecutive victories in the annual varsity competition from 2007 to 2023.
