Byron Bay Skate Park, also known as Jarjumirr Park, is an exciting new tourist attraction that has finally become a reality after more than 30 years of community campaigning. Located at 1 Gilmore Crescent in Byron Bay, this skate park offers an epic experience for skateboard enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
Designed and built by Convic, a renowned skate park design company, the park features a range of innovative and thoughtfully designed elements. The centrepiece is a 10 ft skate bowl with a waterfall and granite coping, providing an exhilarating challenge for experienced skaters. For beginners and intermediate users, there is a ramp and bowl area where they can practise and improve their skills.
Apart from the skateboarding areas, the park also includes a plaza section with granite ledges, perfect for grinding and performing tricks. There is also a climbing boulder that adds an exciting rock-climbing element to the park. Other amenities include a table tennis table, accessible pathways, seating areas, and shaded spots where visitors can relax and watch the action.
One of the unique aspects of the Byron Bay Skate Park is its commitment to showcasing the local indigenous culture. The park features cultural educational signage and artwork created by local Arakwal artists, celebrating the rich history and heritage of the area. Additionally, there is a yarning circle where visitors can gather and share stories, providing a space for community connexion and storytelling.
The funding for the park came from a collaboration between the NSW Government and Byron Shire Council. The NSW Government provided $2. 05 million in funding support, while Byron Shire Council contributed an additional $600,000. The park's construction started in August 2022 and was completed in May 2023, making it a brand new addition to the Byron Bay tourist scene.
With its stunning location near Cape Byron and the Lighthouse, the Byron Bay Skate Park offers not only a thrilling skateboarding experience but also breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty. It is conveniently accessible via Middleton Street, near the Byron Bay library, although ongoing works on Gilmore Crescent may affect access.
For more information or inquiries about the park, interested individuals can contact Jim Roberts, the Coordinator of Open Space, at 02 6626 7000 or through email at council@byron. Nsw. Gov. au.
