Bushwalkers of Western Australia (BOWA) is a sports club based in Perth that promotes and facilitates bushwalking in the beautiful outdoor areas of Western Australia. With a complete annual programme, bushwalking with BOWA is a year-round activity, offering opportunities to explore nature and stay fit.
During the winter months (May to October), BOWA focuses on longer walks of up to 20 km in length. These walks typically take a full day and are suitable for reasonably fit individuals. Some winter programmes may also include shorter half-day walks to provide variety. The walks take place in diverse locations such as the Bibbulmun track, Monadnocks region, Avon Valley, Toodyay, and Serpentine areas.
In the summer months, BOWA members participate in shorter half-day walks in and around Perth. These walks are completed before midday and serve as a way to maintain fitness. Popular locations for these walks include Fremantle, Cottesloe Beach, the Swan River, and Herdsman and Joondalup Lakes. Many of these walks also incorporate stops at cafés for refreshments.
The equipment required for summer walks is basic, including shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and water.
BOWA welcomes anyone aged 18 or over to join their club, and visitors are also welcome to experience bushwalking with them. Prospective members can start by walking as a visitor to get a feel for the club and its activities. It is important to note that all walk participants must provide evidence of double vaccination against Covid-19 due to club policy.
With a current membership of approximately 60 members, BOWA is an informal bushwalking club that organises outings mostly on weekends. While most walks take place in and around Perth, the club also organises less frequent outings to more distant areas such as the Stirling Ranges and Dwellingup. It is significant for participants to have a reasonable level of fitness, equivalent to that of a moderately active person. If individuals regularly walk and can comfortably cover 3-5 km at a steady pace without taking a break, they are likely fit enough for bushwalking.
For those interested in connecting with fellow bushwalkers, BOWA also hosts social events such as their Annual Christmas Party, providing an opportunity for members and their friends to catch up and celebrate together.
To stay updated on BOWA events and walks, the club's website offers an events calendar where visitors and members can find information on upcoming activities.
