Higaonna is known for his devotion and dedication to martial arts. He began his training in martial arts under the guidance of Aragaki, a well-known master in Okinawa. In his early twenties, Higaonna travelled to Fujian Province in China to further his training. There, he studied under various masters and mastered the techniques of Chinese martial arts.

Upon his return to Okinawa, Higaonna established his own style called Goju Ryu, which combines elements of Chinese Kung Fu and Okinawan Karate. This style focuses on circular movements, close combat, and quick, powerful strikes.

Throughout the years, Goju Ryu gained recognition and popularity, and Higaonna became known as one of the most influential martial artists in Okinawa. His teachings emphasised discipline, respect, and personal growth, instilling the values of Bushido in his students.
