Join Ellesmere Riding & Trekking Centre for a short break trail ride and escape from it all. This local Horse Riding club in Brecon invites you to explore the beautiful mountains, valleys, and woods of Wales on horseback. With their experienced cobs as your guides, you can navigate the Welsh mountains and tracks while enjoying breathtaking scenery.
The Short Break Trail Ride is available as a weekend or mid-week break, depending on availability. The weekend kicks off on Friday evening, where Ellesmere Riding & Trekking Centre can meet you at Abergavenny station if you're arriving by train. After that, you'll be welcomed at a local village inn for dinner, giving you the chance to meet your fellow riders and discuss the weekend's program.
On Saturday, after a hearty Welsh breakfast, you'll head to the stables to meet your horse for the ride. From there, you'll travel to Brechfa Common, which serves as the starting point. As you venture into open moorland and forestry, there will be ample opportunities for long canters. Don't forget to keep an eye out for red kites soaring above! The ride will then take you into the small valley of Cwm Owen, up onto a remote open hill, and past Pant-y-llyn, where you'll reach the highest point of the route at 1540 feet. Descending towards the farmland of the Afon Duhonw, you'll enjoy a stunning view of Builth Wells. After approximately six hours of riding, you'll reach the overnight stop for the horses. In Builth Wells, known for the Royal Welsh Show, a comfortable bed and breakfast in the town centre will be your accommodation for the night. You can dine at a nearby pub with your fellow riders and explore the local shops.
Sunday morning starts with caring for your horse before setting off on the day's ride. You'll have the option to retrace the previous day's route or join the Wye Valley Walk, passing through fields and climbing Banc y Celyn. Along the way, you'll catch sight of the River Wye and Aberedw rocks, which are said to be the hiding place of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. Heading southward back to the stables, there are various routes, byways, and narrow country lanes to choose from. Once you arrive back at the stables, the horses will be groomed and fed for the final time before enjoying a well-deserved rest in the field. You can expect to leave Ellesmere stables around 6:30 PM.
Please keep in mind that the specific route and content of the trail ride may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and accommodation availability.
