Located just 20 minutes northwest of Gympie, in Queensland's Sunshine Coast region, is the Brooyar rock climbing area, also known as Brooyar Crags. This popular climbing destination offers primarily short steep single-pitch sandstone climbing, making it a thrilling experience for climbers of all levels.
Brooyar Crags is well-known among climbers, thanks in part to the information provided by Lee Cujes' guidebook. The crag features a total of 427 routes, ranging in grades from 1 to 31. With over 29,340 ascents recorded, it's a favourite spot for climbers looking for a challenging and exhilarating climb.
To reach Brooyar, climbers can take the main highway north from Gympie and follow the well-signposted turn-off for the Wide Bay Highway, leading them to Kilkivan. After approximately 2. 85 km, climbers will need to take a left turn onto Petersen Road, which turns into a dirt road after about 1. 6 km.
From there, climbers will follow the meandering path to the crags and campsite. While the side roads may lead to uncharted territories, following the main road will eventually lead climbers to the right destination.
For those looking to stay overnight, camping at Glastonbury Creek is available for $6. 55/night. However, it is important to note that the previous “pay and display” system is no longer available. Instead, climbers must book their camping spot online through the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service (QNPWS) website.
Brooyar holds cultural value to the First Nations people of the area, particularly the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi people. The rock shelter at Brooyar was historically used as a seasonal hunting location, and it contains significant cultural features such as archaeological sites with stone artefacts, charcoal, and bone fragments. All information provided about the cultural significance of the area has been gathered through research and with respect, but the community welcomes feedback to ensure accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
With its beautiful sandstone cliffs and challenging routes, Brooyar rock climbing area is a must-visit for climbers looking for an exhilarating adventure on the Sunshine Coast. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced climber, this crag offers a wide range of routes to suit your skill level.
