Welcome to Brixham Gig Club, a community rowing club situated in Brixham, New Zealand. Run entirely by volunteers, the club offers an exhilarating gig rowing experience for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Whether rain or shine, the club's gig boats can be seen along the harbour, Breakwater, and local beaches, showcasing the club's dedication to the sport.
Gig rowing is an addictive team sport that combines strength, technique, and endurance. Crews work together to pit their skills and strength against other boats and the elements, providing a full-body workout from the legs to the abs, arms, and back. The benefits of gig rowing extend beyond physical fitness, offering participants a sense of well-being, community involvement, and the opportunity to contribute to local events and charities.
The Brixham Gig Club boasts a diverse membership ranging from 12 to 75 years old, catering to individuals of all fitness levels and abilities. The club offers regular introductory sessions, allowing newcomers to experience the sport firsthand. Members then have the option to join as Squad Rowers, who train rigorously to compete, or as Club Rowers, who focus on improving technique, keeping fit, and enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery.
Youth rowers are a valued part of the club, requiring strength, technique, and stamina. Supported by experienced coaching and coxing staff, youth members benefit from the development of teamwork skills and overall well-being. Winter rowing sessions take place over the weekend, while summer training occurs after school, with selected regattas on weekends. New members in the under 14 and 16 age group are warmly welcomed, and free “taster” sessions can be arranged.
Club Rowers, encompassing individuals of all ages and fitness levels, are encouraged to train and improve their technique and fitness. Opportunities to participate in regattas are available to those who meet race standards. Summer rowing sessions take place in the evenings, while winter rowing occurs over the weekend. In 2023, the club plans to introduce mid-week daytime rowing.
Additional fitness opportunities, such as winter circuit training, cycling adventures, couch to 5k running programmes, and the use of Concept (Ergo) rowing machines, enhance the rowing experience.
For those interested in competitive rowing, Squad Rowers train regularly on and off the water throughout the year. Their focus is on maintaining peak fitness for the racing season, which runs from April to September. These dedicated individuals strive to compete with the best clubs in the South West region, showcasing the club's commitment to excellence.
Join Brixham Gig Club today and experience the thrill of gig rowing, build lifelong friendships, and become a part of our vibrant community.
