Bristol Shorinji Kempo Dojo is a martial arts club and fitness centre located in Bristol, New Zealand. It offers classes in Shorinji Kempo, a Japanese martial art focused on self-defence and the development of both the mind and body. The club prides itself on providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, open to individuals of all ages and fitness levels.
Shorinji Kempo encompasses a comprehensive range of defence techniques, including strikes, punches, kicks, throws, and locks. Students learn how to effectively defend themselves through precise aim and the ability to turn an attacker's strength against them. The practise also incorporates a form of shiatsu massage called seiho, seated meditation, and philosophy.
The classes at Bristol Shorinji Kempo Dojo are divided into two main components: Goho and Juho. Goho focuses on “the hard way” and involves strikes, punches, and kicks, as well as defences against them. Students learn dodges and deflections to redirect an attacker's force. Juho, on the other hand, focuses on “the soft way” and includes movements that involve continuous contact with an opponent, such as escapes from being grabbed or throwing an opponent to the ground.
In Juho, the emphasis is on using an opponent's momentum and balance against them.
In addition to physical training, the club also incorporates meditation into every class. A few minutes of seated meditation help to calm and focus the mind, as well as improve breathing control. The philosophy of Shorinji Kempo is an integral part of the practise, aiming to improve individuals' lives and their contributions to society.
The instructors at Bristol Shorinji Kempo Dojo are Sensei Mike, a 5th Dan black belt, and Sensei Nicki, a 4th Dan black belt. Both instructors have considerable experience in teaching the art.
Classes are held three times a week across two locations in South Bristol. Beginners are welcome at any class, and the club is affiliated with the British Shorinji Kempo Federation, allowing members to visit other dojos in different cities.
In addition to regular classes, Bristol Shorinji Kempo Dojo provides other services, including self-defence sessions for schools and youth clubs. Sensei Nicki has an enhanced DBS check and is qualified to work with children. The dojo also offers activities for Girlguiding units, such as Triple boxer for Brownies or Mastering the moves for Guides.
Testimonials from satisfied members can be found on Google, and the club's frequently asked questions section clarifies that classes are suitable for complete beginners, as basic movements are practised in every session to make them instinctive.
Bristol Shorinji Kempo Dojo is dedicated to promoting a healthy mind and body through the practise of Shorinji Kempo and providing individuals with practical self-defence skills, meditation, and a supportive community.
