Are you the owner of Brighton Kendo Club?

Get ready to step into the exciting world of kendo with Brighton Kendo Club! Founded in the summer of 2014 by Pascal Stiefenhofer, with the help of John Gale and Ross McGoldrick, this club is dedicated to bringing the ancient Japanese fencing art of kendo to Brighton and Hove. Brighton Kendo is run by a team of passionate, qualified volunteers eager to share the thrill of kendo with everyone, regardless of age.
Kendo originated from the swordsmanship of Japanese warriors around the 10th century. While it has evolved from a combat technique to a discipline of self-control and mutual respect, modern kendo still promotes a healthy mind and body, fosters friendships, and encourages physical exercise through inclusive competitions.
At Brighton Kendo Club, they stay true to kendo's culture and values. In Japan, kendo is widely respected within the police force, and many top players are officers. Following this tradition, the club instils values like strength, politeness, fairness, and friendliness. The mantra, “Kendo begins with etiquette, ends with etiquette,” underscores the importance of proper conduct both on and off the floor.
First-timers just need to show up in comfortable clothing like a loose t-shirt and jogging trousers. Practising kendo is done barefoot, so tidy toenails are a must for safety. No booking is needed—just come during advertised slots. For beginners, all necessary equipment is provided for free.
Brighton Kendo Club is perfect for those new to kendo. Their dojo strongly focuses on the fundamentals, making it ideal for beginners or those wanting a taster session. Adult beginners (16+) from Brighton and Hove are welcome, and students can enjoy support services like equipment rental.
As proud members of the British Kendo Association (BKA), Brighton Kendo Club ensures a safe environment with clear CRB (DBS) checked coaches, some of whom hold BKA coaching certificates. They follow BKA guidelines for protection policies, health, and safety.
