Bridge Wood Field Archery Club is a small and friendly club located in Berry Court Wood, Hoo, Rochester. The main focus of the club is to practise and promote the sport of Field Archery. The club is proudly affiliated to the National Field Archery Society (NFAS), which is responsible for governing the sport in the country.
Bridge Wood Field Archery Club was established in 1991 in Bridge Woods, Buckmore Park, Chatham. However, due to the construction of the Channel Tunnel rail link, the club had to relocate in 1997 to Beacon Hill, Chattenden. Unfortunately, the land at Beacon Hill was sold by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in 2008, and the club had to move once again, this time to its current location at Berry Court Wood.
Berry Court Wood holds the prestigious title of being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which means it requires special care and protection. As a result, the number of members allowed to use the wood is strictly controlled under an agreement with Natural England, the organisation responsible for the protection of the wood under its SSSI status. Additionally, due to its SSSI designation, dogs are not allowed to accompany their archers during open shoots to ensure the preservation of the wood's unique environment.
Field Archery is the practise of simulating hunting by shooting at life-size foam or picture targets of animals. It's important to note that shooting at living creatures with a bow and arrow is illegal in Britain. At Bridge Wood Field Archery Club, archers navigate a course laid out by the club's field officer and shoot at targets set at varying distances, which adds an element of challenge and excitement to the sport.
