Established in Leicester, Braunstone Chess Club is a vibrant and welcoming community dedicated to the timeless game of chess. Located in the Fosse room of the Civic Centre, the club opens its doors every Wednesday evening from 7. 30pm, providing a space for enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels to come together and indulge in their passion for chess.
With a rich history of success and participation, Braunstone Chess Club has consistently boasted good attendance numbers, particularly in the months of May, June, and July. In the 2022/23 league season, all three Braunstone teams showcased their prowess and achieved commendable results, avoiding any threat of relegation. Looking ahead, the club is eagerly preparing for the upcoming league season, set to commence at the end of September, where teams will once again showcase their skills across divisions 1, 2, and 5.
Notable achievements for Braunstone Chess Club include their second-place finish in the Summer Wylie cup. Winning two matches, drawing one, and losing one, the club amassed a commendable 5 points out of 8, narrowly missing out on the top spot. These achievements display the club's dedication and commitment to their craft, continually striving for excellence on and off the board.
The club has recently undergone some changes, with the club night transitioning from Tuesdays to Wednesdays. This adjustment was made to accommodate the Civic Centre's early closing on Tuesdays, while Wednesdays present an opportunity for extended playtime until 11pm. This change ensures members can fully immerse themselves in the captivating world of chess within a supportive and stimulating environment.
In line with discussions among members and the Leicester and Rutland County Chess Association (LRCA), Braunstone Chess Club is delighted to announce their plans for the upcoming league seasons. Approved by the LRCA, the 2022/23 league will feature four players in each team across each division. Braunstone Chess Club will proudly field three teams in divisions 1, 2, and the bottom division, each captained by experienced and dedicated individuals, including Mike Salisbury, Jim Bingham, and Guy Closs. The club aims to minimise scheduling conflicts with their online 4NCL teams, ensuring members have ample opportunities to participate without overlapping commitments.
Membership of the English Chess Federation (ECF) is essential for league play, enabling members to compete in league matches and contribute to Braunstone Chess Club's collective success. Moreover, the club has secured the Fosse room at the Civic Centre, guaranteeing a conducive environment for both league matches and club night friendly games to occur simultaneously.
Braunstone Chess Club also has a rich social fabric, organising regular club nights that will run continuously every Wednesday from mid-September until May 2023. These club nights foster a sense of camaraderie and provide an opportunity for members to engage in casual, friendly games and exchange insights and strategies.
