About

Camaraderie of a supportive team environment. The Bondi Junction Kyokushin Karate Club also offers classes for adults of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced practitioners. The instructors at the club are highly experienced, with a combined total of over 100 years of experience in both practising and teaching Karate.

The philosophy of Kyokushin Karate is not just about physical strength and technique, but also about personal growth and self-discovery. Each person brings their own unique personality to their interpretation of Karate. The word “karate” itself means “empty hand”, emphasising the use of one's body and mind as the ultimate tool for self-defence and personal development. The word “kyokushin” means “ultimate truth”, reflecting the aim of uncovering one's true potential through the practise of Karate.

The Bondi Junction Kyokushin Karate Club is proud to serve as the Australian and South Pacific Headquarters of the International Karate Organisation, under the leadership of President Yoshikazu Matsushima (IKO-Matsushima). As such, the club is deeply rooted in the rich tradition and heritage of Kyokushin Karate.

The benefits of Kyokushin Karate extend far beyond physical fitness. The rewards system of promotion helps to improve self-esteem, while the structure of the classes promotes self-discipline. Through the practise of Karate, one can channel their aggression in a positive and controlled manner. Confidence-building classes enhance assertiveness, while the programme as a whole equips students with lifelong self-defence skills.

In addition to these benefits, training in Kyokushin Karate provides a great fitness regime, relieves stress, and is a lot of fun. The training also hones the ability to operate under pressure, developing mental fortitude and resilience.

The Bondi Junction Kyokushin Karate Club is affiliated with the Australian Kyokushin Karate Association (AKKA), which in turn is affiliated with the International Karate Organisation Kyokushin Kaikan. More information about the club's affiliations can be obtained from the AKKA website.

Located conveniently at Shop 3, 87 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction, the new dojo is only 100m west of the end of the Oxford Street Mall (pedestrian plaza) on the south side of the street. It is easily accessible by public transportation, being a short walk from the Bondi Junction railway station and bus terminal.

The club offers a range of classes tailored to different age groups and skill levels. Adult beginners can join the specifically designed beginners' classes, where they receive personalised attention and guidance. After 10–12 weeks, they have the opportunity to participate in a grading and earn their first belt. From there, they can continue on their journey towards the ultimate fighting and self-defence grade of the Black Belt.

For children, the Kyokushin Karate kids classes focus on fostering respect and discipline, while also helping them develop confidence and teamwork skills. The children are encouraged to participate in non-contact karate tournaments, where the emphasis is on participation rather than winning. This reinforces the club's successful confidence-building programme and allows children to experience the rewarding transformation from shy and aggressive to outgoing and well-disciplined individuals. Self-defence techniques are also taught to ensure that all students are equipped with the necessary skills to protect themselves.

At the Bondi Junction Kyokushin Karate Club, students not only learn effective self-defence but also become part of a welcoming and supportive community. The club offers a social atmosphere where students can forge lifelong friendships and enjoy the journey of personal growth through the practise of Kyokushin Karate.
