The Boating Calais Rally is not an event to be missed if you're a boating enthusiast in Canvey Island. Organised by the renowned Benfleet Yacht Club, this annual rally takes place over the late May Spring Bank Holiday weekend and attracts yachts from different clubs in the southeast of England.
One of the highlights of the rally is the Commodores Pontoon on Saturday. Imagine sipping on your favourite drink while enjoying delicious buffet food provided by the Commodore. It's the perfect way to kick off the event and connect with other sailing enthusiasts.
On Sunday, the excitement continues with two separate presentations for the visiting yachtsmen. The first presentation, held at the memorial adjacent to the small fishing boat harbour, is hosted by the Narrow Seas Club. It's an excellent opportunity for sailors to come together and share their experiences.
The second presentation, hosted by the Little Ships Club, takes place in the Marina Clubhouse building. This prestigious event is attended by the Mayor of Calais and other dignitaries, adding an extra touch of grandeur to the rally.
2020 and 2021 were unfortunate years as the rallies had to be cancelled due to the Covid19 pandemic. However, we have high hopes for the upcoming event and look forward to seeing old and new faces on the water.
In 2019, Benfleet Yacht Club proudly had a total of 10 boats participating in the rally. Some of these boats, measuring under 30 feet, even made their first crossing of the English Channel. Their courageous spirit truly embodied the adventurous nature of sailing.
With their outstanding participation, Benfleet Yacht Club was victorious in winning the overall Calais Town trophy for the club with the highest number of boats attending. However, they did lose the Narrow Seas Pennant, a prestigious award that they had held onto for the past 15 years, to Upnor Sailing Club. Every event brings new challenges and surprises, and that's what keeps the rally exciting.
One notable achievement from the 2019 rally was Dave Norman and Frank Martin aboard Talavera receiving the trophy for the smallest boat with the greatest distance sailed, based on water line length. It's a testament to their determination and skills in navigating the open waters.
The Boating Calais Rally is more than just a sailing event; it's a gathering of like-minded individuals who share a passion for boating. It's a chance to celebrate this shared passion and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow yachtsmen. So mark your calendars and join us for an unforgettable weekend of adventure, friendship, and sailing.
